The blockchain is a network of computers distributed around the world.

Using encryption to keep data safe, it provides a decentralized database, or "Digital Ledger", of informations that everyone in the network can see.

No central authority

Until today, most people have used a trusted intermediary (e.g. a bank) to make a transaction. The blockchain allows consumers and suppliers to connect directly, eliminating the need for a third party.

The term “decentralized” indicates that the network is not governed by a central authority. A central authority is subject primarily to corruption and hacking and therefore does not constitute an ideal solution to the problem of certification and reliability of data.

Trust and honesty are insured by the network itself

Each computer that composes the blockchain, contains the same copy of a public registry that updates continuously as the information is logged on it.

The honesty of the network is guaranteed by the mathematical and computational principle that rules it.

Impossible to tamper with

Is it possible to hack a computer on the network by tampering with a copy of the registry? Absolutely! However, as 99% of the remaining computers contain the “official” copy of the Registry, a single hacked computer is not enough to falsify the data. It would be necessary to hack at least 51% of the network.

The blockchain network has such a high computational power that tampering with 51% of the network translates into an expenditure of energy and money so onerous as to make this kind of attack extremely unlikely.

Originem has chosen the blockchain

Originem uses this register to certify the whole chain of Made in Italy, giving guarantees both to the producer and to the consumer about the reliability of the data.

The only use of blockchain technology, however, is not enough to prevent someone from falsifying a product. That is why we have combined our DNA-based molecular tagging system with Blockchain.

DNA + blockchain = 100% protection.

Ethereum: the programmable Blockchain

Ethereum is a public Blockchain that allows the development of programmable code and the execution of real decentralised applications.

It is a solid and Open Source project that brings together thousands of nodes around the world in continuous development. The information exchanged on Ethereum can be consulted by anyone, remaining impressed forever, even if ORIGINEM should suddenly fail.

The Ethereum network allow us to work on a completely decentralised system, with all the inherent benefits of Blockchain technology.

Modular technology by Hyperledger

Hyperledger Fabric is an open source enterprise-grade permissioned distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform, designed for use in enterprise contexts, that delivers some key differentiating capabilities over other popular distributed ledger or blockchain platforms.

Fabric has a highly modular and configurable architecture, supported and followed by The Linux Foundation in partnership with IBM.

With ORIGINEM we are integrating the DLT technology made available by Hyperledger with our DNA tagging system, developing an unprecedented solution that allows us to innovate the supply chain protecting the Made in Italy.
